Department of Emergency Management
The Department of Emergency Management (DEM) prepares for
- Coordinates Response
- Logistical Support
- Mitigation
- Recovery for all-natural and man-made emergencies and disasters
The term emergency means a set of circumstances that demand immediate action to protect life, preserve public health or essential services, or protect property. Disaster means the situation is beyond the capabilities of the responding jurisdictions or organizations. April ’05 – Amtrak derails east of Stevenson; fortunately, there were only a few minor injuries – this time. Such incidents clearly illustrate the potential for disasters; and the importance of being prepared.
There are four identified phases to Emergency Management:
- Preparedness
- Mitigation
- Response
- Recovery
We are always engaged in at least one of these phases; it is a continuing cycle.
