Burn Permits

Residents are required to have a burn permit for an outdoor fire. Burn Permits in the City of Stevenson are self-issue. Contact Underwood Conservation District to see if your project qualifies for free mobile chipping as an alternative to outdoor burning.

One copy must be kept at the residence, and an additional copy must be turned in to the same collection box outside the front door at City Hall.

Conditions/Restrictions

Between July 1 and September 30th no open burning/debris fires will be allowed.
During periods of impaired air quality or during an emergency burn ban, open burning/ debris fires are not allowed—Call 800-633-0709 for air quality conditions.
Do not light a fire in winds over 5 m.p.h. If winds exceed 7-10 mph, the fire must be extinguished.
Burning is restricted to natural vegetation which was grown on the property or bare untreated and unpainted wood, except for the paper required to ignite the fire.
It is unlawful to burn paper, cardboard, treated wood, construction debris, household waste or garbage, dead animals, asphalt, petroleum products, paint, rubber products, plastic, or any substance which, when burned, releases toxic emissions, dense smoke, or obnoxious odors.
Clearances:
1. Not less than 50 feet from any structure for pile sizes greater than 3 feet in diameter.
2. Not less than 25 feet from any structure for pile sizes less than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height.
An adult person capable of extinguishing the fire shall attend to it at all times.
1. Open burns or debris fires shall not exceed 10’ x 10’ x 5’ high or multiple fires that do not exceed a combined total of 100 square feet.
2. Burning shall be conducted during daylight hours only.
If the fire creates a nuisance, it shall be extinguished.
It is required to have a shovel and charged garden hose and/or 5 gallons or larger water container at the burn site.
